My hygienist is FANTASTIC. I have been a patient for many years and have referred many of my friends and coworkers and will continue to do so!

Professional Cleanings
What is a professional dental cleaning?
A professional dental cleaning (dental prophylaxis or "prophy") is a preventative treatment that compliments your home care (such as brushing and flossing). In addition to the cleaning, it is an important opportunity to monitor your overall oral health and maintain your teeth and dental restorations.
Who will do my dental cleaning?
Your dental cleaning appointment will be with one of our Registered Dental Hygienists. Each of our hygienists has years of education, experience and advanced training. You'll find them all very knowledgeable, warm, caring, and gentle.
Most of our patients regularly see "their" hygienist, but depending on your schedule, you may see more than one. Our hygiene team works well together to provide you with continuity of care.
What will happen at my dental cleaning appointment?
Your dental cleaning appointment will usually last from 60-75 minutes. During that time you will have opportunity to talk about your overall health, any dental problems or concerns you may have, and review your plan for staying free of dental disease.
In addition to a dental exam with your dentist, your appointment will include the following:
- Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that accumulates on the tooth surface both above and below the gum line. Tartar can only be removed with special dental instruments.
- Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, colorless film consisting of living bacteria, food debris and saliva. Unless plaque is removed, the bacteria will produce toxins (poisons) that can inflame the gums, leading to periodontal (gum) disease.
- Teeth polishing: Gentle professional polishing removes stains and traces of plaque that remain on the teeth so you can enjoy that “just left the dentist” clean feeling.
You hygienist will also take your blood pressure, do a screening for signs of oral cancer and may include taking intra-oral digital photographs and/or dental x-rays if needed for diagnosis
What are the benefits of having a professional dental cleaning?
Dental cleanings, when done at the frequency recommended for you, are indispensable for the prevention of tooth decay, gum disease and your overall oral health. However, there are many factors that contribute to developing cavities. Your hygienist will be pleased to share tips to enhance the work you do at home to keep your smile healthy. As always, good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits are recommended following your dental cleaning
How often do I need to see my dental hygienist?
How frequently your hygienist or dentist recommends dental cleanings for you will depend upon your individual oral health needs. Some patients build-up tarter more easily or have signs and symptoms of gingivitis (early stage gum disease) and benefit from visits every 3-4 months. Others can do well being seen twice a year. No two mouths are the same. Your hygienist will be able to determine the frequency most beneficial to you based on factors like home care, risk of decay and your overall health
